Is there really a standard progression? Do casino's even know what the hell color or spot progression is or is this invented by chippers???

Seems idiotic to me! Controversial?

Spots are there to make chips easier to count from a distance (ie, the catwalk). From the time before cameras. The more the chip is worth, the more important it is to be able to count it.

Sure, I like "spot progression" in a chip set. It helps differentiate denoms from one another by more than just colors. I don't mind a whole set of 314 spots either. There should be no RULES for spot progression. I get ticked off too when I see a mockup post that gets criticized because the spots didn't go exactly as someone else thought they should.
I wasn't criticized for these spots but here's an example. No real mathematical formula here, just what I thought looks good:

Raise your hand if you have gorgeous $25 & $100 chips in your set that never hit the felt in your $.25 / $.50 cash game. Me too. I chose to use the Diamond Jacks $500 chip as my frac because of that reason.

Does it put anyone here on tilt? If so, why? Certainly none of the mooks in my game would care. Bingo markers would be just fine with them. I wish the whole progression thing didn't exist. Who looks at anything other than the base color or what value is written on the chip to determine it's worth? If anyone can give me a legitimate purposeful reason for spot progression I'd love to hear it.

I can get that many people don’t really care about progression, heck many don’t even care about dice chips.

But I don’t fit in that category. I’d like to think if you gave people these diamond chips with the denominations blurred out, a healthy majority would probably sort these differently.

Maybe even monkey’s who don’t have a bias might sort these differently… or a crow, those birds are smart…

I think it has something to do with organization. People who are obsessive compulsive versus people who are cool with chaos like multi-base colors in a rat rod set.

To each their own, I don’t think there’s a right or wrong

Why do casinos in the same state basically keep the same colors for each denomination? Eliminate the color = denomination factor and eliminate the denomination then maybe there's an argument for pips to tell the story. Here's a clusterfuck of a hold em tournament I ran into:

I don't think I made a single bet without looking at that chart. The regulars were already pretty used to it and I'm sure eventually so would I (except that every game since I've brought my Horseshoe Tributes Tourney chips 😁).

lmao mixed dice, not using any denomination on the chip, using some with $ and some without... I think I'd rather play non-denominated...

I hate not having my chip pics from my old phone (insert Ben’s red denim mixed set) I love and believe in spot progression. Old school I guess but I like solid fracs and work your way up!

Sometimes it’s not possible… like building a mixed hot stamp set, sometimes it’s impossible to find the perfect chip… but I try to always keep progression in mind when building
