Most single casino chips I've seen are in the $0-$300 range. Surely there are really rare chips that command a much higher collector value. Are there well-known singles or general classes of chips that are wildly valuable? Is there a 1913 V-nickel of casino chips?

One of the most expensive chips that I know of is the Golden Goose $5 chip. That sold for somewhere upwards of $50-75k years ago at a chip auction. Supposedly the only chip that is known to be out there other than a single rack or two that the actual casino had for a single blackjack table that they were using.

Oh, what a coincidence. I was just reading about The Golden Goose and it's one blackjack table. The article mentions there was only 1 known chip to exist. I wonder if it's the final remaining chip or perhaps more that were lost/destroyed or if there was only ever one $5 chip. If the latter is true, why did they only have one? Did they use all single dollar chips or something (or silver dollars more likely). I wonder if dollar bills were also allowed as play tender. We need a Hollywood movie to flesh out the details!

They only had one blackjack table because the place was so small.

From what I've heard the person who owned it, their daughter or family member has the chips. One chip got away and that's the "only" known chip out there. At the time I think they used the $1 tokens or silver dollars as the $1 chips. I've seen plenty of old pictures from casinos that did that which is interesting and not out of the norm.

The threat that any day, a hoard dump of chips (like a family member in this instance) could emerge and the one chip that commanded $75K suddenly plummets in value.
Wow, that's the risk in high-level singles collecting.

So true!! That's why i wont pay top high dollar for "Rare" Chips! 75k today $300 tomorrow.

This may sound pretty cynical but I no longer collect stuff. I collected things (not casino chips) in the past and it's a fickle universe out there. On another forum the topic came up of how Paulson chips are commanding big prices now - and that is obviously true. But if you buy the chips from Paulson under surreptitious means, they are a LOT cheaper. I stated then and I'll say it again: You can have your Paulson chips but if things go awry, what will they really be worth? I'll keep my gold and silver.
I like things that have intrinsic value but I don't collect currency coins either. I prefer bullion rounds and ingots.

My other sickness for years has been slots!! Yes slOts! The forum New Life Games is much like any of our forums or do I say either? Classifieds have game software and licenses for sale like we have chips. Difference, a game and license fob set is 500 - 1800!!!

Very true. I guess we chip set collectors are a little safer in that we collect what we love and will use, but not for its' resale value as an investment.

But dont get me wrong, I love that my Paulsons hold their value and maybe appreciate. It is comforting to know that should I change my mind, I could immediately get my money back. But if the bottom ever fell out on them, I would still be happy with my chips.

Yup. My general point was that supply and demand typically set values in most commodities. In rare cases, there is a "surprise" increase in supply that upsets the apple cart.

I’m surprised the dunes $25k chip doesn’t go for more…actually. Unique size, story and less than a few racks ever made. But maybe that’s why I have 10 lol.

10????

The rack that is held by the family or whoever is said to be drilled. Hence the price for the $5 that got away in someone's pocket. I too stay away from a lot of the high dollar Vegas chips as much as I like them because these chips were made by the thousands...not the hundreds like CA where the rooms were often just 1 table in the back of a bar. If that z rated chip you're looking at is 70 years old and not dirty, worn or dinged....Id be pretty sus of a box out there.

If someone is sitting on a box of high value chips my guess is they leak them out casually over the years to other dealers who then sell them on the downlow. The 1st issue Sahara $5 and Dunes $5 come to mind. You never saw these chips before...but in the last couple years they are starting to come out. My guess is when you are a dealer at 45 years old you can play the waiting game. When you start hitting the golden years you probably start unloading your "hoard" a little faster. Again this is pure speculation. Caveat Emptor
